SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DOUBLE PORTRAIT, oil on canvas with possibly original yellow pine stretcher, a striking composition, likely by the same hand as the following lot, featuring a grandmother and grandchild seated in an interior with Shenandoah Valley landscape in the background, the child holding a clutch of roses and pointing to the open page of a spelling primer, subjects identified on old inscribed labels verso as Rebecca Branson (1791-1853) and Ann Chunn Gardner (1842-1861), no signature located. Housed in a 19th-century molded-walnut frame with gilt sight edge. Circa 1845. 36" x 29" sight, 44 3/4" x 37 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: The present double portrait descended in the Earle-Chunn-Gardner family of Clarke Co., Frederick Co., and Warren Co., VA. Ann Chunn Gardner (1842-1861), the young girl in the portrait, was born in 1842 in Warren Co., VA and died young in 1861 while attending Hollins College in Salem, VA, where she is buried.
