VIRGINIA "CROSSED LAUREL LEAVES" VARIATION APPLIQUE QUILT, hand-stitched, 16 whole and four half pattern blocks in printed fabrics on white ground, featuring green laurel leaves with Turkey red petals, having all-over diagonal grid quilting, probably later applied binding possibly covering original binding, three-paneled plain backing. Another nearly identical example of this quilt has a history of ownership in the Shenandoah Valley. Circa 1860. 81" x 91 1/2".
Good overall condition, top with overall toning, scattered stains and spotting, many red fabric pieces with typical losses to dark-colored print, some light fading mostly to green fabrics, backing with toning mostly along fold lines and edges, overall spotting, scattered stains, one mended hole to one corner, at least one other small hole in another corner.
