WEST VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE CANNER, salt-glazed, approximately one-quart capacity, cylindrical form with grooved wax-seal rim, slight shoulder, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "H.F. BEHRENS / COMPANY / WHEELING, W.VA.", additional leaf-like/diamond decorative ornaments. Circa 1880. 7 1/8" H, 4 5/8" D rim.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith, Romney, WV.
Catalogue Note: Hans Friedrich Behrens (1845-1910) was born in Bavaria, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1867. He married Maria Ulrich, also a German immigrant, on September 2, 1869 in Wheeling. Behrens is listed as a "Retail Grocer" in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 United States census.
