WEST VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE OVERSIZED JAR, salt-glazed, designated sixteen-gallon capacity, semi-ovoid form with flat-top rounded rim, beaded neck ring, applied arched handles, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "H.F. BEHRENS. / GROCER, / 2217 & 2219/ MARKET STREET / WHEELING. W. VA. / SOUTH BRANCH 3601/ JACOB ST." and "16" below, brushed cobalt floral foliated vine-like design, stripes below rim, to shoulder, and above base, additional cobalt to handle terminals. Circa 1880. 22 7/8" H, 13 1/2" D rim.
Provenance: Property of a West Virginia gentleman.
Catalogue Note: Hans Friedrich Behrens (1845-1910) was born in Bavaria, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1867. He married Maria Ulrich, also a German immigrant, on September 2, 1869 in Wheeling. Behrens is listed as a "Retail Grocer" in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 United States census.

Condition

Having a minor rim hairline, an approximately 8" hairline crack extending from area on back rim where kiln furniture rested, possibly as made, and a minor chip to one handle.
