WILLIAM LOUIS SONNTAG (AMERICAN, 1822-1900) LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES, oil on board, an autumnal scene at twilight, featuring three figures on a rocky outcropping, signed lower right, period pencil inscription verso "Sontag / 100.00". Housed in a period, possibly original, gilt frame with molded-composition ornamentation. Fourth quarter 19th century. 7 3/4" x 9 3/4" sight, 14 1/8" x 15 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Pittsburgh, PA, William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900) studied and worked in Cincinnati, Ohio before moving to New York City in 1857, where he would remain. An important member of the Hudson River School, Sonntag traveled widely painting landscapes and is known to have visited Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
Excellent overall condition with very minor craquelure. Frame with minor wear and small losses.
