AMERICAN DECORATED EARTHENWARE / REDWARE DISH / PLATE, single lead-glazed, coggled rim. Yellow slip-trailed inscription "Hancock / for / Ever!". Fourth quarter 19th century. 9 5/8" D.
Catalogue Note: The inscription on this plate refers to 1880 presidential candidate Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886). Hancock was an esteemed United States general originally from Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania. After serving in some of the Civil War's most famous battles including Antietam and Gettysburg, Hancock rose to senior major general by 1872. After successfully winning the Democratic nomination for president in 1880, he would eventually lose to popular Republican candidate James A. Garfield. Hancock's last public service before his death in 1886 was his oversight of the funeral of Ulysses S. Grant in 1885.

Condition

Very good condition having a shallow rim chip with associated hairline, an approximately 2 1/4" L rim hairline, and some crazing.
