ANTIQUE SAINT-LOUIS CLOSE-PACK MUSHROOM MILLEFIORI ART GLASS PAPERWEIGHT, close-pack composition featuring unusual canes with a generally pastel pallet, featuring a variety of canes including complex, cross/butterfly, and blue and white floral canes, all surrounded by a rare amber torsade with interior opal filigree twist, rayed to the underside. Compagnie des Cristalleries de Saint Louis. Dated 1848. 2" H, 3" D.
Literature: Parallels - Glass Paperweights of the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, pl. 20, fig. 441 (having amber torsade).
Catalogue Note: The Bergstrom-Mahler Museum identifies an amber torsade with Saint-Louis mushrooms as being rare. Saint-Louis close-pack mushrooms are less common than concentric examples in a mushroom composition. This weight features very unusual canes with some showing large areas of open white or blue borders and unusual designs. I have never seen a similar example.
Undamaged. having a couple of minute interior inclusions, as made.
