DUTCH / BELGIAN FREE-BLOWN BLACK GLASS CASE / CASE-GIN BOTTLE, dark olive-green/black, one-gallon size, early square "case gin" form with very slight inward taper, short neck with applied drippy rounded "pig snout" mouth, kicked-up base with wide blowpipe pontil scar. 1770-1800. 12 1/2" H, 4 1/4" SQ base.
Literature: Parallels Van den Bossche - Antique Glass Bottles, p. 131, pl. 83, fig. 4.
Catalogue Note: The present example is a little bit shorter than the bottle pictured by Willy but weighs a very close 1490 grams (as compared to the 1440 gr. weight of the pictured bottle), suggesting a remarkable consistency of glass gather size and intention to produce the same 4 litre / one gallon capacity despite the different height.

Condition

Undamaged with very minor wear and slight interior residue. One interior surface open bubble, as made.

Collection of the late Al and Billy Steidel, Alexandria, VA.
