DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (1880-1969) TYPED LETTER SIGNED, on personal stationary, dated February 20, 1948, in a Presidential-like voice addressing International Brotherhood Week and Eisenhower's interest in it based on his recent experiences in World War II, personally and boldly signed in blue ink, retaining original mailing envelope. Two pieces total. Reserve. Dated 1948. 10" x 7" object.
Catalogue Note: The present letter from Dwight D. Eisenhower, written five years before his Presidency would begin, clearly demonstrates the General's deliberate efforts to position himself as a civilian leader in the wake of World War II. What's more, the language of the present text is quite extraordinary and indicates a degree of linguistic skill not often associated with the writer. In describing "the flawless human unity...wrought among men whose common denominator was comradeship in the defense of freedom", Eisenhower is drawing upon his past to address concepts of brotherhood. In the letter's conclusion, he also addresses concerns for a future characterized by a "civilzation paralyzed and wasted by dissension". A future in which, as he intimates in this 1948 public letter, he intends to play a major part.
