ENGLISH / AMERICAN CHINTZ PIECED QUILT, (updated 11/14/22) hand-stitched, having a framed square arrangement with center block encompassed by single fabric borders and two pieced borders, completed in chintz and print fabrics, sparse straightline quilting, one end with knife binding and three edges with front-over-back binding, multi-paneled muslin backing. Circa 1830. 88 1/2" x 104".
Provenance: From a private collection in Washington, DC.
Very good visual condition, top with some scattered stains, several tears, holes, mends, and patch mends including to center block, dark print fabric with green, and other chintz fabric, backing with light toning, some scattered stains and spotting, a large patch mend at one end. Chintz fabrics retaining original glazing.
