FITZ FAMILY, FRANKLIN CO., PENNSYLVANIA "WILD GOOSE CHASE" PIECED CRIB QUILT, hand-stitched, having 15 whole, 11 half, and two quarter plain yellow fabric on-point blocks featuring plume and plume wreath quilting with various centers, pieced diagonal pattern sashing in various print and plain fabrics with channeled straightline quilting, all four sides with three striped borders and diagonal grid quilting, narrow back-over-front binding, two-paneled plain backing. Quilt comes with a hand-written note, which reads "FITZ FAMILY CRIB QUILT / This quilt was purchased from the estate of Ralph H. Fitz, b. 1924-d.2021, son of John W. Fitz b.1880 [actual life dates: 1881-1960], and Nora (Hess) Fitz [1891-1988]. John was the eldest son of 7 children born to Jerome C. Fitz, b. 1849 [d. 1926] and Anna (Hess) [actually Law] Fitz [1850-1920] - who possibly made the quilt. The late Mr. R. Fitz still lived on the family farm in the original home located on Fitz Rd. (now Lane) near Waynesboro, in Washington Twp., Franklin Co., Pennsylvania." Circa 1875. 39 1/2" x 43 3/4".

Condition

Good to very good overall condition, top with some very light toning, scattered stains/discoloration including to sizable areas in two corners, and some spots of fading, backing with overall toning, areas of discoloration, and stains. Original tracings for quilting in yellow fabric blocks, as made.
