GEORGIAN ENGLISH STERLING SILVER NUTMEG GRATER, ovoid form with plain exterior, lid conceals a hinged metal grater fitted to interior. Impressed to interior base with "IT" maker's mark possibly for John Thornton, interior base and lid each with four hallmarks of a lion passant for sterling fineness, an anchor city mark for Birmingham, a "b" date mark for 1799, and a King George III duty mark. Total weight including non-sterling components: 0.895 ozt. Circa 1799. 1 3/4" x 1 1/8" OA lid.

Good overall condition with some wear, surface scratches, and nicks, some minor denting, grater with heavy corrosion and oxidation causing the lid to not completely close.
