GERMAN SEWING / DARNING NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERS, SET OF TWO IN FRAME, each red and white wool on white linen/cotton, comprising a darning sampler with seven squares of various darning stitching above six patches, all framing embroidered signature of "Agnes Horch." in fancy lettering; and a sewing sampler with several bands of various stitching, top edge with buttonholes, two buttons, and both parts of a hook-and-eye closure, lower edge signed "Agnes Horch. 13 I alt. 1896." Both housed under glass in a modern wood frame. Late 19th century. Darning sampler 13 1/4" x 13 1/2" OA object, sewing sampler 13 1/2" x 8 1/2" object, 21" x 27 3/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: Possibly identified as Agnes Horch [Harch], who born January 12, 1883 in Germany to parents Joseph Carl Horch and Francisia Eisenmenger. She immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century and settled in the Pacific Northwest. Agnes married Joseph Dolp (1865-1956) on July 13, 1913. They lived in Portland and, then, Yamhill, Oregon and had two children, Pauline and Carl Joseph. Agnes died on July 16, 1970 in Aberdeen, Washington, her death certificate reports she was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Seattle.

Condition

Excellent visual condition with light toning and a few scattered stains, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
