IDENTIFIED CONFEDERATE MECKLENBURG CO., NORTH CAROLINA SOLDER SIXTH-PLATE TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPH, a torso-length depiction identified as Corporal John Alexander Gibbs (1830-1862), in his wool jacket proudly holding a carbine rifle and wearing a slouch hat. 1861-1862. 3 7/8" x 2 1/2" plate.
Catalogue Note: The present image is identified by a paper sleeve penciled "Tin Type of Great GrF John Alexander Gibbs (Belongs to Marian Samuelson)." Marian Gibbs Samuelson (1922-2014) was the great-granddaughter of John Gibbs. The lot is also accompanied by a 1939 letter from the War Department with information about Gibbs.
John Gibbs enlisted on September 16, 1861, as a Corporal in Co. C, 37th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. He was killed on August 9, 1862, at the Battle of Cedar Run in Culpeper Co., Virginia.
