SIGNED HENRY LOWNDES (D. 1842), PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity, ovoid form with flat-top rounded rim, beaded neck ring, and applied arched handles. Slip-trailed and brushed cobalt decorations including script reading "H. Lowndes / Maker / Petersburg Va / 1841" to one side, reverse featuring a quintuple boll cotton plant, and looped shoulder design, additional cobalt to handle terminals. Henry Lowndes, Petersburg, VA. Dated 1841. 9 3/8" H, 5 7/8" D rim.
