STAMPED BELL FAMILY, STRASBURG, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA JARS, LOT OF TWO, comprising a salt-glazed stoneware example, "2" gallon capacity mark, cylindrical form, stamped "S BELL & SON / STRASBURG", having brushed cobalt dropped feather decoration repeated three times to shoulder, and a single lead-glazed earthenware/redware example, approximately one-gallon capacity, wide-mouth form with grooved rim, stamped "[SOLOMO]N BELL / STRASBURG / Va". The pottery of Solomon Bell (1817-1882) and the pottery of Samuel Leonard Bell (1811-1891) and/or his sons Richard Franklin, Turner Ashby, and Charles Forrest, Strasburg, VA. Second half 19th century. Salt-glazed example 12 5/8" H, 8" D rim.
"2" gallon stoneware example undamaged; earthenware example having rim hairline. Manufacturing flaws including stoneware example with firing separation to rim, as made.
