TENNESSEE CHERRY SUGAR CHEST / DESK, hinged slanting lid with applied moldings, concealing a divided interior featuring three upper scratch-beaded drawers with likely original glass knobs, case set with large fielded panels, the whole raised on turn feet. Poplar secondary wood. Original brass hinges and iron cabinet lock. Retains an old refinished surface with warm color. Probably Shelby Co., TN. Circa 1835. 35 1/2" H, 37" W, 20 1/4" D.
Literature: See Williams/Harsh/Parks, The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture and Its Makers Through 1850, p. 141, fig. 152 for a sugar desk with identical construction and turned feet, likely from the same shop as the present example.
