WEST VIRGINIA STENCILED STONEWARE CANNER, salt-glazed, approximately half-gallon capacity, cylindrical form with slight shoulder, grooved wax seal rim, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "JOHN HUGHES, / KEYSER / WEST VA.", additional circle flanked by triangles decorative ornament to middle. Circa 1875. 7 7/8" H, 4 1/4" D rim.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith, Romney, WV.
Catalogue Note: John Hughes (1834-1904) settled in Keyser, West Virginia in 1861. He operated a successful general store in the town for 45 years. He also served as the town's postmaster for a time.
